There was no sign of Nikki Cox at Patriot's training camp on Wednesday. No doubt she was too busy filming the episodes for the fall season of "Las Vegas" and letting husband Jay Mohr defile her perfect body to be there. But if she had been, she would've observed the following:
The morning practice session consisted of basically a half-speed instructional walk through for the bottom 32 guys on the roster. And Nikki would've found it interesting to see who was on the field for it and who was given the time off along with the core personnel. On the O-line, among the bubble guys you'd expect to see out there like Brian Barthelmes and Clint Oldenburg, was Russ Hochstein. Some surprises who got the day off were LB Pierre Woods, DB Larry Anam, OT Wesley Britt and DL Santonio Thomas. So Nikki would probably reach the conclusion that Hochstein is fighting for a roster spot and those guys are safe.
Unlike the reporters at the 11:15 press conference, Nikki didn't hear Bill Belichick praise Vince Wilfork for his versatility, calling him the best NT he's ever had. "Vince pretty much does everything well, I wouldn't say there's any big weakness in his game... It's not like 'This is his strength, but he's not very good at everything else," said the coach. "He's pretty good at everything. From that standpoint, yeah, I'd say he'd probably be the most complete guy I've coached at that position."
If she cared about the Pats QB depth chart, Nikki would probably be saying "Things don't look good for Matt Gutierrez making the final roster. The undrafted rookie free agent out of Idaho State has had accuracy issues. While he showed some good poise in the Tampa game, he continues to throw a lot of interceptions. Undoubtedly, Vinny Testeverde will be in camp before the end of August and will the 3rd string QB."
More from Ms. Cox: "With the backups taking most of the practice time, rookie Oscar Lua got most of the reps at the Mike (strong side inside LB) with 2nd year guy Corey Mays playing the Jack (WILB). As it stands, the final LB roster spot appears to be a battle between these two."
Because she's beautiful and has an amazing body, it's possible that Nikki is a Notre Dame fan. If she is, she'd be happy to hear that 6th round draft pick DB Mike Richardson has looked impressive. He's shown good ball skills both in the Bucs game and in the practices since. Tuesday he made a nice diving break up of a long Cassel pass down the sidelines. Yesterday Belichick gave him about as much praise as he'd ever give a rookie this early, Mike is aggressive...He's competed well. He's a tough kid, been out there every day. That means he's improving, working hard. He's a lot better now than he was a couple weeks ago. And she'd keep an eye on him Friday night against Tennessee.
Nikki probably hasn't expressed an opinion on battle between Nick Kaczur and Ryan O'Callaghan for the starting RT position, which was expected to be one of the most competitive in camp. But if she was like most observers, she would say that Kaczur has separated himself and is clearly the front runner at this point.
Lastly, Nikki Cox is a girl. Girls love nice hair on a guy, so she would've hated the fact that the Pats veteran's dished out the rookie hair cuts Wednesday. But she would've been weak in the knees when Jon Bon Jovi appeared and walked the practice field talking to his pal Belichick. 100% of the Earth's female population love Bon Jovi. Even the insanely hot redheaded ones.
